ORGAN HISTORY

Did you know that our church organ was designed by one of the premier organ
builders of the 20th Century? Ernest M. Skinner (1866-1960) was well known in
the organ world for developing a multitude of new sounds, or voices, for the pipe organ.
He ran his own organ-building company in the early 20th century, but to survive the
Great Depression, merged in 1932 with the Aeolian company.

In 1947, the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company was hired by Harold Gleason, chair of
the organ department at the Eastman School of Music to install five (!) practice organs
at the school. Following Gleason’s retirement, the organ department at Eastman
decided to install a greater variety of instruments for student practice. This eventually
led to the 1968 purchase of “Opus 1126″ by the First Baptist Church of Brockport.

The instrument was installed by the Parsons Organ Company
and is in excellent condition following a refit in 2007.
